Just Cause Education Outreach was founded in 2011 by two Canadian teachers. It began as a non-profit organization based in Southwestern Ontario and gained Canadian Charitable status in 2017.
Both founding members, Sara Hansen and Michelle Massaro act as Directors and serve the organization as Volunteer Team Leaders. As teachers they spend the school year fundraising in Canada for their projects and travel to Uganda during school break periods to oversee the on-going projects and to work with Ugandan students.
The Board of Directors and volunteers are made up of Canadian teachers. This is where Just Cause gets its enthusiasm for education!
saRA HANSEN (Co-Founder and Director)
Sara is a high school leadership teacher for the WRDSB. She serves as the secretary and treasurer for Just Cause while in Canada. In addition to this role, she oversees our fundraising, develops project framework and project phasing, reports to the CRA and communicates progress with sponsors. She is also our lead guest speaker and leads our volunteer teams.
MICHELLE MASSARO (Co-Founder and Director)
Michelle is a Visual Arts teacher with the LDCSB and a FIRST Robotics lead mentor. This is where the passion for teaching & introducing STEAM to students in Uganda began! As the robotics program lead, Michelle chaperones & organizes each of our Ugandan robotics teams for international competitions and regional tournaments, as well as ongoing school outreach programs. In addition to this, Michelle develops curriculum and workshops, project phasing and framework, sources & manages equipment and speaks at events. She also leads our volunteer teams, our on-site student-teacher training, and is our project development coordinator in Uganda.
Alex has served as the Ugandan co-ordinator since 2012 with Just Cause. He is the link to the programs and projects between the team in Canada and Uganda. Alex co-ordinates and leads the team when there are Just Cause volunteers on the ground in Uganda.
Kathy is a high school Science teacher with the LDCSB. Since becoming involved with Just Cause in 2014, she has created curriculum for the robotics programs and served as the lead mentor to Canadian students who advise the robotics programs in Uganda. Just Cause is proud to have Kathy, a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching (2016) on the team!
